Exploration leads to Discovery

Canon 5D Mark II camera and Canon 24-105mm f4 L series lens

The images in today’s post are from a photo walk I recently undertook with a bunch of photography students in the city of Melbourne. The weather was humid and, frankly, most folk were tired and somewhat lacking in enthusiasm. To instill some sense of excitement in the group I decided the theme of the day should be abstraction and the surreal and headed for some of the city’s lanes and alleyways.

It’s amazing how entering an unusual environment and taking a different approach (subject matter, lens focal length, shooting position and distance from subject, color balance and rendition, etc) can produce a very different way of seeing. The once banal becomes mysterious and evocative, the narrow lane ways worlds unto themselves.

It’s incredible how visual stimuli can effect one’s perception of space and time. The shoot was a success and I left refreshed and excited by the idea of similar excursions in the future.
