This image was made during a course I was running on Portrait photography. The shoot was held at an artist’s retreat in Melbourne, Australia.

I have a particular love for and, therefore, affinity with existing light photography. We were working in a darkened room with very low levels of light. I looked around and noticed a splash of light falling over a small area of the stone floor. It seemed to me that that was where the next portrait needed to be made.

A special thanks to Marion, one of the course participants, for agreeing to model. Needless to say, without her this image would not have been possible. I’m sure the stone floor was cold, but photography is a physical endeavor and it’s not just the photographer who endures hardship in their quest for a great image. I’m sure hundreds of fashion models would agree.

Adobe Lightroom 2 was used for processing the initial image, prior to rendering into black-and-white and then warm toned in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
