One of my favorite themes in photography is duality: that is, a thing and its opposite. So, for example, horror and beauty, war and peace, despair and hope. Many of the very best photographs contain such dualities.

To my mind graffiti is a case in point. Is it art or vandalism? To my way of thinking the best graffiti is beautiful and worthy of attention. But, like most other folks, I wouldn’t want offensive language and/or lurid images sprayed over my front fence. It’s all a matter of intent, talent, permission and, not to labor the point too much, perspective.

The City of Melbourne, in my home state of Victoria, has numerous lane and alleyways decorated with interesting, humorous and provocative graffiti. For the most part I think its great. Together with wonderful cafes and restaurants, unique shopping opportunities and Victorian architecture these art-laden strips are a great reward for the more adventurous visitor to this fare city.

Processing was conducted in Adobe Lightroom 2 and Adobe Photoshop CS4.
