Solarization

Church Interior

Today’s image continues with our exploration of traditional film/darkroom based effects achieved within the digital domain. The above image is the original digital color file while the image below revisits Solarization, a technique from the days of the darkroom, where the photograph is rendered as part negative and part positive by the act of flashing the print with an extremely short burst of light during development.

Made famous by American photographer Man Ray in the late 1920’s, Solarization is one of those old-school techniques largely lost with the transition to digital. And that fact makes it all the more worthwhile re-visiting it here.

The Solarization technique was simulated in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
