Soft Light and a Kind Subject

Canon 5D Mark II camera and Canon 50mm f1.2 L series lens Exposure Details: ISO 100

Canon 5D Mark II camera and Canon 50mm f1.2 L series lens Exposure Details: 1/640 second @f1.2 ISO 100

Here’s an image from a recent workshop with a great bunch of enthusiasts. The image was made on a day with relatively flat, uninspiring weather.

I photographed Dorota, one of the participants, with a Canon 50mm f1.2 lens. It’s a well-built lens that handles easily. The exceptionally shallow Depth of Field achieved at f1.2 enables the point of focus (e.g. eyes) to stand out against the defocused surroundings.

The bokeh, a term that describes the degree to which out of focus highlights assume the shape of the lens aperture, is particularly pleasing with this lens. Lenses that produce round, out of focus highlights are highly regarded by photographers who appreciate the aesthetics of blur.

The original color image was converted to black-and-white in Adobe Lightroom 2.0

A special word of thanks to Dorota who kindly posed for myself and other members of the group during the process of making this image.
