It’s that time of year again in the Southern Hemisphere: Autumn, the season for contemplation that precedes the bleak beauty of winter. Melbourne, where I live, is favoured with clear bright days throughout most of the season. After a long summer the leaves have begun to change color and fall over recent weeks. With it’s predominantly warm colors and deteriorating subject matter the above image celebrates this wonderful time of year.

I employed critical focusing and a shallow Depth of Field (DOF) to place emphasis on the subject by de-emphasizing its surroundings. It’s a very simple image that relies on the color, shape and texture of the subject to communicate the theme of the image. The use of a shallow Depth of Field (DOF), achieved through an aperture of f 2, ensures that potentially distracting background elements won’t compete for attention with the image’s major focal point.
