Here’s a very simple close-up of a fallen leaf on a patch of textured earth. I like the contrast in form between the gentle feminine shape of the leaf against the hard, textured earth. Placing the leaf off-centre adds a slight tension to the image and encourages the viewer to consider the background almost as much as the more obvious focal point provided by the leaf.

I employed my Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro L series USM lens to isolate this tiny scene from its surrounds. I even poured water over the area photographed to add a sense of brilliance to the still life. The sunlight produced tiny specular highlights on the wet leaf and earth that increased variations in local contrast throughout the image.

I employed Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS3 to process the image and render it as a warn toned black-and-white.

Its wonderful how such a simply detail provided so much fun and invention. I hope you enjoy the result.
