Cape Woolemi_Philip Island_Australia

This image was made at sunset at Cape Woolemi on Philip Island in Victoria, Australia. I remember how invigorating it felt to witness the soft, warm light illuminating the rocks and enhancing their already saturated color. However, the resulting color was so strong that it diminished the other design elements within the image.

I felt that the graphic shapes, lines and texture within the image were well suited to rendering in black-and-white. I employed a Black and White adjustment layer in Photoshop CS3 to achieve the desired outcome. As part of that process I increased contrast, for a more dramatic result, then added a slight sepia-like tone to re-introduce the notion of warm, end of day light to the image. The darker foreground rocks and sky draw attention to the brighter rock formation in the centre of the image.
