Jiuzhaigou National Park is situated in Sichuan Province, China. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit this park on two occasions, summer and winter. One day I hope to visit in autumn when I’m sure the colors will be particularly beautiful.

The above image was made during winter with a Hasselblad 503CW camera and Hasselblad 150mm f4 Sonnar lens with Kodak Portra 160VC film. The conditions were difficult to work under, with the mercury below 0°C. I’d been walking and photographing all day with my good friend, Lucy, a Sichuan lass from the capital Chengdu. Very late in the day the light turned warm and I was able to make this image with the warm colored grasses contrasting against the iridescent green of the river cutting its way through the landscape. It’s a favourite image that came, maybe as a reward, after a long day in the field. We both enjoyed our evening meal and rest that night.
