While on a photography trip to the Victoria Alps I paid a quick visit to Mount Buffalo in Victoria, Australia. Part way up the mountain I decided to pull over and take a look around. Just off the road I discovered this lovely scene. Moving water, trees and rocks always provide opportunities for the energetic [...]

This is a very old image, one of the oldest I have on file. It features a village and cultivated fields backing onto step hillsides fringed by low overhanging clouds. I made the image during my first trip to Tibet in 1988. It was my first overseas adventure and involved great beauty, excitement, hardship, illness [...]

The Bay of Martyrs is an interesting and scenic location just outside the town of Peterborough along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. While less grandiose and considerably less visited than the famous Twelve Apostles, the Bay of Martyrs can be a sublime location, given the vagaries of weather and light.
The above image was made under late [...]

Squeaky Beach is a favourite location for visitors to Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria, Australia. This image was made at sunset. As I was facing the sun the difference in brightness between the dark foreground rocks and the much brighter sky was extreme. As a result the rocks were rendered as a silhouette. This [...]

Here’s the final shot from last weekends Landscape Photography workshop near Lorne along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. It’s my favourite image with the falls as the major focal point of the scene.
I feel the 1/10 second shutter speed has provided the right mix of substance and flow for the falling water. I [...]

Here’s an image from one of my all time favourite shooting locations: Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Around 30 minutes drive further west from the famous Twelve Apostles will take you to London Arch. Formerly known as London Bridge the middle section of this once double-span natural bridge collapsed in 1990. While the similarity with its [...]

Here’s an image from a bleak morning at Aireys Inlet on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. This small, quiet beachside town has always interested me. In particular the quality of light on the river and beach are often quite magical. For those that are able to make the trip, I highly recommend Aireys [...]

Here’s the first of several images I plan to publish over the next few days from Half Moon Bay in Melbourne, Australia. I made the images during one of my Landscape Photography workshops. Details of upcoming workshops will appear on my blog within the week.
The above image is a relatively straightforward sunrise, composed in portrait [...]

I’m really glad that I no longer make prints in darkrooms. I’m old enough to remember the romance of the darkroom. It was that long ago. Yet not so long ago that I forget the many hours standing in either total or near darkness, on hard floors in a fixer-scented room. As a consequence I’ve [...]

Here’s an image made on a bleak morning at Scenes Creek just outside Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. With the amazing sunrise for which I’d hoped not likely to eventuate, I turned my attention to the incoming tide and the foreground rock that had, no doubt, been worn down by [...]
